A few years ago, gaming was limited to PC and game consoles such as Playstation or Xbox. Also playing board games with friends was (and is) simply part of a good Saturday night. With digitalization, everything was about to change. For some time now, gamers have increasingly opted for mobile alternatives instead of local consoles.
But that's not all: our technological progress now even offers mobile multiplayer gaming. Simply switch on your smartphone and start the game you desire. From any location! Just an internet connection is necessary. Long journeys and waiting times before appointments can thus be combined with fun. In addition to the usual mini-games like Angry Birds, you can now even play PUBG. You can find a lot of top mobile apps on the internet.
Mobile Gaming: Why is it becoming popular entertainment?
But why is mobile gaming so popular? Let’s find out!
1. Better than any location-based option
Mobile games bring many advantages for players. First of all, you don’t need a lot of equipment. Moreover, there are no opening hours on the net. If the player feels ready, he picks up his smartphone and gets it going. This can be in the middle of the night or in the early hours of the morning.
Gaming with your mobile phone is a limitless experience and free of judgment. Anyone can participate, completely regardless of their attire and where they are. Most games are quite simple but some games come with top graphics and include a great story.
2. Various games and top-notch graphics
There is an extensive range of games in the mobile world. Usually, the digital providers focus on a wide range of games. Each game has its own specifics. Many players love level-based games because it is fun to progress. This is quite handy if you don’t have that much time to play – e.g. while waiting at the bus stop.
Out there are many licensed games one already knows from other platforms. You can play FIFA 21 on your smartphone even though it is not the exact same game as on PC, Playstation, or Xbox. But you can play it everywhere – and that's the point.
Of course, the graphics are also convincing. Thanks to the individual settings of mobile devices, the color quality can even be adjusted. Smartphones get better and better displays. But the game developers try to find a way so that everyone can have a great gaming experience.
3. Some games take you to the real world
Playing computer games is considered to be something for couch potatoes who don’t want to go outside. With some mobile games, it is the opposite way around. Games like Pokemon Go or Wizards Unite don’t work if you just sit at home.
Instead of this, you have to go outside to explore the inner world of those fun-to-play role-playing games with the so-called Augmented Reality. At some points in the game, you can only progress if you take enough steps. This is a great motivation for a lot of people who find it hard to stay motivated while doing activities outside.
Apart from Augmented Reality, there is also another big trend in the gaming industry: Virtual Reality. To be honest: This will take players back again into their flats but it is still a great experience so we should talk about it. Nowadays nearly everyone knows the VR glasses which are worn to simulate a virtual environment.
Game designers start improving in creating game concepts that take the opportunities of VR into account. Still, the technology isn’t completely developed yet. But there will be huge improvements and new creative ways of gaming in the future soon.
4. A lot of mobile games are free-to-play
If you browse to the App Store or Google Play Store you will see that most of the games are for free. You can download them and have hours of fun without paying any money. But why do game developers decide to do this? There are different concepts on how to monetize mobile games. One of them is an in-game advertisement. But this normally doesn’t pay off well because the revenues are just too low. Also, players feel uncomfortable if there is too much advertisement around them.
So the better option is offering a paid version or in-game currency to unlock special features. New players don’t typically choose this option. So for the game developers, it is very important to get constantly new players who learn how the game works. If it is community-based it is even more crucial that there are a lot of players registered. And by offering the game for free a lot of players decide to try it at least – and if some of them pay money after some hours of gaming, everyone wins. People refer to this as “free-to-play and pay-to-win”. But it’s a fact that you can have a lot of fun without investing money in games or consoles. This is an important reason why mobile gaming is becoming more popular day by day.
